App Shelf — app_shelf

A list of streaming apps somebody wants offered, with no hardware behind it at all.

It exists because of what a television cannot say. A Roku lists its own channels and a room can show exactly those; a VIZIO launches anything SmartCast has but has no local endpoint that lists what is installed, so the only honest thing core can offer for one is the whole column of apps its platform can run — thirty-odd tiles, most of which nobody in the house has ever opened. A shelf is the other half of that: somebody says which apps this house actually watches, and every screen offers those instead.

Structural rather than av, for all that it is about televisions: every other contract in that category is a box with a power cord, and there is nothing here for a virtual driver to pretend to be. It is a device rather than a house setting so that it is placed, named, and edited with everything else — and so a house can have more than one. Nothing drives it and it drives nothing: apps is the whole contract, and the launching is still done by whichever player the catalog says can open the thing that was pressed.

Names are matched through the app catalog, so Prime Video, Amazon Prime and prime are one entry and the spelling on the shelf does not have to be the spelling a box reports.
